Anuj Jain:

I think Good stocks that are available at a discount are a better protection from inflation or depression.

You cannot just live with cash in the bank you have to consume food, clothing and shelter.

Generally utilities do well in down times as their consumer bases are virtually guaranteed..

Another good option would be oil marketing companies..
1. Govt guarantees profitability for oil marketing companies so the companies will always report profits
2. Win the drop in Oil prices you can expect the marketing companies to make better margins..

Infact if demand really drops the oil marketing companies have a captive base of consumers for their refineries out as compared to standalone refineries such as reliance and essar who will have to dump their products in the market (when demand is low)

Another stock I would recommend is Venkys India.
Sales year ending MArch 2008 =520Cr
Gross Profit =58.81Cr
Net Profit=26.61Cr
Equity=9.39Cr
Face Value=Rs 10/=
Current Market Price=124/=
Market Cap=115.99CR
Dividnet is Rs3.5 per share

So in 2 years Venkys Gross profits is more than 124/= per share.
OOPS looks like you are a jain...
Dont know if you will touch it with a Yard stick ..

So maybe Oil marketing companies is a good option.. (though they have run up a bit.. and oil might not fall below 100 Dollar per barrel.)

=happy investing.
