Sensex plunges by 435 pts on inflation worries
After posting a modest gain yesterday, the markets nosedived today with the benchmark Sensex dipping by over 430 points on heavy selling in interest-sensitive banking and reatly stocks.
Marketmen said selling trend returned ahead of the release of inflation data as investors anticipated the rate of price rise to go up further.
The market yesterday snapped five days of selling pressure to post a gain of over 100 points. The 30-share Sensex on the Bombay Stock Exchange settled the day at 14,243.73, a loss of 434.50 points, or 2.96 per cent, from its previous close.
The National Stock Exchange index Nifty also lost 131.90 points, or 2.99 per cent, to close at 4,283.85.
Market participants said investors adopted a cautious stance amid a possibility of further rise in inflation following approval to an average 21 per cent salary hike to the government employees.
A weakness in in Asian and European equity markets also impacted the trading sentiment in domestic bourses, they said. Asian indices fell sharply by about 0.77 per cent to 3.63 per cent while European markets were trading substantially lower in their morning session.
They said investors looked worried about the financial crisis across the world that could drag G-7 nations into a recession and have cascading impact on global markets. Inflation sensitive sectors such as realty and banking were the worst affected.
Realty shares such as HDIL tumbled by 24.96 per cent, Ind Bulls Real Estate by 7.36 per cent, DLF by 5.55 per cent, Unitech by 5.35 per cent, Sobha Developers by 5.20 per cent and Penland Ltd by 5.24 per cent.
It is feared that a slowdown in economy would result into lower demand for real estate, leaving the developes high and dry.(PTI)

L & T has declared book closure for the AGM. The B.C is from 22-08-08 to 29-08-08. The AGM will take place on 29-08-08 and consider the proposals for the dividend of Rs.15 plus Rs.2.00(=Rs17/-) and the bonus issue. Once it is approved at the AGM, the company will arrage to pay the dividend only within 30 days.
Then they will propose a record date for the issue of bonus shares. All share holders having the shares in the books of the company or in their depository account as on that record date, will be issued bonus shares/demat account will be credited.
There will be notice to the exchange and 15 days time will be given. The exchange will also announce an ex-bonus date in their website.
As on date AGM is yet to take place and hence the company cannot assume itself that it has got the proposal passed and fix a date for bonus issue. If they desire, the dividend can be considered as interim and paid with a notice. Then no final dividend can be proposed. This has taken place, with Sundaram fastners and their group companies,to avoid delay. You may all remember that many companies resorted to this practice, when the dividend tax was proposed for the companies two years ago.
As on date there is no announcement made by the company for the bonus issue. Normally, the record date is announced on the following date to the AGM, after posting the notice to the listed stock exchanges.

Amit Dalal of Amit Nalin Securities is of the view that one can buy Larsen and Toubro or Hindustan Construction and Simplex. They have enough work to do both in India and overseas to justify any kind of growth forecast that we may have for them for the next two years.

Nuk Deal & NSG Tension

45 constituents of NSG will meet today to discuss agreement between India & US for nuclear energy pact. The “Non-Proliferation treaty” will not tolerate to exempt India & allow going ahead with Indo-US Nuclear Power Project.
New Zealand, Brazil, Switzerland, Germany & many other countries have already shown their inconvenience regarding this pact between India & US. US officials told to media that they are going to take every step to obtain green signal for this deal.
But days have changed now. If 45 countries conclude to not permit this deal & deny to exempt India on “Non-Proliferation treaty” basis then US can do nothing. India will continue to struggle with its Black-Out like situation for another 7 to 10 years.

Engineering and construction giant Larsen & Toubro (L&T) is likely to acquire equity stake in coal mines in Australia and Indonesia, reports Business Line.
Picking up a stake in coal mines is part of L&T`s strategy to increase its focus on the power sector. Apart from tying up with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for manufacturing super-critical boilers, turbines and generators, L&T also plans to set up power plants on its own, including bidding for ultra-mega power projects, or pick up equity stake in projects being set up by others.

Traders should be cautious on L&T for short term. Any resistance on N-deal front is likely to play a spoilsport for capital goods and energy stock which can provide a buying opportunity in the sector...
