RN,
Sorry to but in
Garuda puranam etc has no mention in Upanishads,Geetha
Or in Rig veda
In fact i was advised not read these at home
Look at this way
GOD is embodiment of love
Will he punish a soul for ever?
Till the man becomes the way he want, there is circle of birth and death
and in between hell or heaven
This is where the difference with other religion
One Side its is said he is full of love and only love
How he will permanently punish?
Even his creation the humans seldom hang a person
Even life term convicts are let out after some time due to compassion
If we humans can have this small compassion
Will the creator will have less?...

34. There is one big tree there, glowing like a blazing fire. It covers five yojanas and is one yojana in height.

35. Having bound them on the tree by chains, head downwards, they beat them. They, for whom there is no rescuer, cry, burning there.

36. Many sinful ones are hung on that silk-cotton tree, exhausted by hunger and thirst, and beaten by the messengers of Yama.

37. `Oh, forgive my faults`--with suppliant hands, those most. sinful people, helpless, implore the messengers.

31. Again and again they are forcibly struck, by the messengers, with metal rods, with hammers, with iron clubs, with spears, with maces and with big pestles.

39-40. Thus beaten they become still, swooning away. Then, seeing them quiet, the servants address them thus:

`O, you sinners, you evildoers, why ever did you commit such wicked deeds? You did not even make the easy water and food offerings at all.

41. `You did not give even halt a mouthful of food to the dog or the crows, nor honour your guests, nor make the water-offering to the forefathers.

p. 26

42. You did not meditate well upon Yama and Chitragupta, nor repeat their mantra, along with which torment cannot exist.

43. You never visited any places of pilgrimage, nor worshipped the deities. Though living as a householder you did not even express compassion.

44. `You did not do any acts of service. Suffer the fruits of your own sin! Because you are devoid of righteousness you deserve to be beaten.

45. `Forgiveness of faults is done by the Lord Hari 1 Îśwara. We only punish miscreants, as we are ordered.`

46. Thus having spoken the messengers heat them mercilessly; and on account of the beating they fall down like glowing charcoal.

47. In falling their limbs are cut by the sharp leaves, and they cry, fallen down and bitten by dogs.

48. Then the mouths of those who are crying are filled with dust by the messengers; and, being bound with various nooses some are beaten with hammers.

49. Some of the sinful are cut with saws, like firewood, and others thrown flat on the ground, are chopped into pieces with axes.

50. Some, their bodies half-buried in a pit, are pierced in the head with arrows. Others, fixed in the middle of a machine, are squeezed like sugar-cane.

16. The sun and moon, fire, wind, sky, earth and water, the heart. Yama, day and night, the two twilights, and Justice--know the actions of man.

17 The King of Justice, Chitragupta, Śravaṇas, the sun and others see fully the sins and merits of the embodied being.

18. Then Yama, having assured himself concerning the sins of the sinful, summons them and shows them his own very terrible form.

19-21. Very sinful people behold the terrifying form of Yama--huge of body, rod in hand, seated on a buffalo,

Roaring like a cloud at the time of pralaya, like a mountain of lampblack, terrible with weapons gleaming like lightning, possessing thirty-two arms,

Extending three yojanas, with eyes like wells, with mouth gaping with formidable fangs, with red eyes and a long nose.

22. Even Chitragupta is fearful, attended by Death, Fever and others. Near to him are all the messengers, resembling Yama, roaring.

23. Having seen him, the wretch, overcome with fear, cries `Oh, Oh.` The sinful soul who made no gifts trembles and cries again.

24. Then, by command of Yama, Chitragupta speaks to all those sinners, who are crying, and bewailing their karmas.

p. 24

25. `O, you sinners, evil-doers, polluted with egoism, injudicious, why ever did you commit sin?

26. `O, you foolish people, why ever did you commit that misery-giving sin which is born of lust, anger and association with the sinful.

27 `Hitherto you have committed sins with great delight, and thereby are now destined for torment. It is no use turning your faces away.

28. `The sinful actions done by you are very many, and those sins are the cause of unavoidable misery.

29. `It is known that Yama deals equally with the fool and the learned, the beggar and the wealthy, the strong and the weak.`

30. Hearing these words of Chitragupta, the sinful then grieve over their karmas, and remain silent and motionless.

31. The King of Justice, seeing them standing motionless like thieves, has fitting punishment ordered for the sinful.

32. Then the cruel messengers, having beaten them, say, `Go along, you sinner, to the very dreadful terrifying hells.`

33. The messengers, Prachaṇḍa, Chaṇḍaka 1 and others, executors of the sentences of Yama, having bound them with one noose, lead them towards the hells.

CHAPTER III.
An Account of the Torments of Yama.
1. Garuḍa said: What are the torments like that the sinful suffers, having passed along the way of Yama into the abode of Yama? Tell me this, O Keœava.

2. The Blessed Lord said: Listen, O Descendant of Vinatâ. I will tell it to you from the beginning to the end. Even at the description of hell you will tremble.

3. Four and forty yojanas, O Kâœyapa, beyond the city of Bahubhîti, lies the great city of the King of Justice.

4-5. The sinful man cries when he hears the mingled wails of `Oh, Oh,` and having heard his cry, those who walk about in the city of Yama.

All go to the door-keeper and report it to him. The doorkeeper Dharmadhwaja, always stands there.

6. He, having gone to Chitragupta, 1 reports the good and evil deeds. Then Chitragupta tells it to the King of Justice.

7. The men who are Deniers, O Târkshya, and always delight in great sin; these are all, as is proper, well-known to the King of Justice.

p. 22

8. Nevertheless, he asks Chitragupta about their sins. Chitragupta, although he is all-knowing, enquires of the Œravaṇas 1.

9. The Œravaṇas are the sons of Brâhmaṇ who wander in heaven, on earth, and in the nether regions, hear and understand at a distance, and see a long way off.

10. Their wives have a similar nature, and are called, distinctively, Sravanîs. They know accurately all that is done by women.

11. These report to Chitragupta everything that is said and done, openly and secretly, by men.

12. These followers of the King of Justice know accurately all the virtues and vices of mankind, and the karma born of mind, speech and body.

13. Such is the power of these, who have authority over mortals and immortals. Thus do these truth-speaking Œravaṇas relate the actions of man.

14. To the man who pleases them by austerity, charity and truthful speech, they become benevolent, granting heaven and liberation.

15. Knowing the wicked actions of the sinful, those truth-speakers, relating them before the King of Justice, become dispensers of misery.

Inappropriate behaviour with one`s daughter-in-law or daughter sends one to the terrible hell of MahAjwAlA, while those who insult Acharyas and the Shruti, one who sells VedAs ( who takes money for imparting scriptural knowledge) and one who consorts with undesirable women-these are destined for a special Purgatory known as LavaNam. Here, though the Acharya is not supposed to demand recompense in cash or kind for imparting knowledge, the sishya, on his own, should offer the best and the most he can to the Acharya, so that the vidyA he has imbibed would be fruitful.

Thieves and those who cross the lines of decency and good behaviour fall into the VilOha narakam, while those who harbour ill will towards deities, ancestors and DvijAs, and those who tarnish diamonds, are pushed into Krimibhaksha narakam, where worms eat one alive. Those who perform undesirable sacrifices fall into the KrimIsa narakam.

There is a terribly tormenting hell known as lAlAbhaksham, reserved for those who eat before propitiating deities, pitru devatas, and guests. This is in tune with the Gitacharya`s dictum that one who eats without offering it first to the Lord, imbibes sin with every morsel of intake. This is to emphasize the indispensability of ThiruvArAdhanam and pitru tarpaNam, as well as atiti satkAram.

Manufacturers of deadly weapons, those merchants of death, are sentenced to the deadly BhEdaka narakam or to Visasanam, depending upon how lethal are the arms they produce.

Those acquiring wealth by unlawful means (one pities the politicians) and those making a livelihood through false prophecies (woe betide our astrologers) go to adhOmukham, (where perhaps they hang by their feet). Those who reserve delicious items of food for themselves, denying one`s children or friends, and BrAhmanAs who sell meat, sesame, salt and resin, fall into the Pooyavaha narakam.

And now a word of cheer for those who own poultry farms, cattle-breeding centers, etc.- those who rear or keep cats, cocks, pigs, horses and birds may also look forward to a spell in Pooyavaha.

RudhirAndha is a spacious hell, which accommodates the perpetrators if the following types of misdeeds-

Professional actors (and we used to envy these matinee idols!)
Wrestlers and Boxers
Fishermen
Those who poison others
Arsonists
Back-biters and complainants
Brahmins who perform karmas for others at times other than those stipulated for their performance
Murderers of friends and well-wishers
Soothsayers specializing in reading omens etc.
Liquor merchants
Village Purohit, etc.

Those who destroy YagyAs and villages fall into the VaitariNI, while those who alter the bunds in fields, those who are fickle-minded and impure-all these may find places reserved for them in the Krishna naraka.

Here is something to cheer environmentalists-those who destroy forests without justification would find themselves consigned to the asipatra naraka, while rearers of rams and brickmakers fall into the VahnijvAlA narakam.

Those who don`t observe the penances (Vratam) they ought to and those who fail to stick to the standards set for their Ashrama (whether they be BrahmachAris, GrihastthAs, VAnaprastthAs or SanyAsis) would find themselves in Sandamsa naraka.

Those who are taught by their own children are also destined to rot in hell, this one being named Shvabhojanam.

The Vishnu Purana adds encouragingly that the aforesaid is only an indicative list of Hells, and that there are thousands more of the same type, depending upon the category of misdeed and its gravity. And after being cleansed of their sins, these people are born again on this earth and graduate from one form to another in their cycles of births- trees, worms, fish, birds, cattle, human beings, righteous men and women, dEvatAs and finally, one who aspires for liberation from this endless cycle of Samsara. Such is the graded rise of births each Atma undergoes, each superior to the previous one. Imagine what a waste of the human birth it would be, if a man doesn`t take advantage of the exalted form he has been blessed with after being born countless times as trees or bushes fixed to the soil or as lowly beings like a worm, bird or cattle! The natural progression thus should be from man to Super-man ( in the sense of imbibing and upholding Dharma in all actions one undertakes) and from there to GnAnI,

Rouravam is the narakam reserved for those who commit perjury. Perjury is of two types-suppressio veri (holding back the truth) and suggestio falsi (furnishing false information). Liars, habitual and occasional, and prevaricators of all hues, are also destined for Rouravam. One who destroys the unborn child, those who obliterate villages and those who kill cows, are all sent to ROdha narakam, where people suffocate, unable to breathe.

Sookaram is the Hell reserved for those who kill brAhmanAs, those who steal gold and those who imbibe forbidden liquors. Not only these people, but their associates too are awarded a spell in this narakam. Though stealing anything is bad, yet filching gold or ornaments made of it ("Svarna sthEyam") is supposed to be heinous.

Those who kill Kings, merchants or royal messengers, those engaging in indecent behaviour with the GurupatnI or sister-in-law, are sent to narakAs called TAla and TaptakuNdam (a pit with boiling water).

TaptalOha is the destination of those who sell horses (one would have thought this to be an innocuous occupation!), prison guards and those abandoning devotees.

We have not seen it. Nor have we experienced it. Yet, the very word is enough to strike deadly fear in our hearts. There is not a single soul who doesn`t dread the fires of hell. We are told that sinners are invariably sent there to undergo just punishment, which cleanses them of the cloying effect of misdeeds. The GAruda PurANa lists out the varied types of torture and suffering people undergo in Narakam, according to the type and quantum of their transgressions. Just a casual perusal of the relevant chapter of this purana is enough to make us toe the righteous path and cure us of the proclivity for misdeeds. From all accounts, it would appear that the penitentiaries of earth are places of rest, relaxation and pleasurable pursuits, compared to the rigours of the Purgatory.

Dreadful as they are, we are yet curious to know about these accursed worlds, where only the offenders are taken, to work-off their sins by undergoing exemplary retribution. As to their location, Sri Vishnu Purana places them below this earth and oceans. The same Purana lists the various types of Hell and the sins of commission and omission, which provide a free passage to offenders to these worlds of terror and torment. Here are a few:

You are misinformed.
Islamic is the fast growing religion in Africa, in Asia, in America in Europe. Please don`t attribute this growth of religion to --forcible conversion--.
Conversion implies the use of force and believe me there is nobody holding a gun to the head of hundreds of thousands of people who convert in progressive soceities like America or Europe. People convert out of their own will and they do because realize that Islam is the true religion.
A person can convert to Islam by proclaiming the --Shahadah--. Its a proclamation that --I believe that there is no God but Allah and Prophet muhammad (pbuh) is the messenger of Allah.
Thats about it - no ritual fire, no holy water , no nothing.

ROTG,

I have yet to answer some of ur questions which i will do shortly.

You said Islam does not believe in conversion but we hear of mass conversion to Islam in Africa and Europe... whats the reason for this. Would u know? How do they convert? Is there some ceremony like christians have baptizing... In Hinduism there is no ceremony and no conversion... just curious thats all.

The minions of the Lord of Hell are absolutely without the finer feelings: their speech is steeped in invective and their actions bereft of mercy or compassion, says Sri Thirumangai Mannan-"kadunsolAr kadiAr naman tamar". We have heard too of the cruel punishment ANi MAndavya, a Rishi, was awarded in Hell for having disfigured a dragonfly, when he was three or four year old-he was impaled on a spear.

I am sure that there are lots of things that you find confusing. I am surprised that you don`t find the fact of modern day idol worship in Christianity as extremely confusing.
I am sure that you have heard of the ten commandments. The fourth commandment STRICLTY prohibits idol worship of ANY sort and in spite of this idol worship is rampant in Christianity. First, go and figure out this basic contradiction and then we can try to address other confusions in life....

You have a muslim way of looking at things... Just like there is a Hindu way... And just like there is MY WAY... 33 crore gods... Did you say... Concotion did u say... Hmmm... When I look inwards... What I see... What I hear... What I believe... is One god is spurious... 33 Gods... Sure a cocktail... Finally 1, 1 crore or 33 crore or 330 crore... All are man made... For to me GOD by defanition does not match definitions provided by any religion... To take ur own example... If god is the one who is responsible for everything where was the need for a messenger ??? Sure beats me... Or did someone else get beat... Or did someone else`s belief get beat... I sure wonder... Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha... ROFL...

JESUS CHRIST was holy spirit .HE talked about the LAST JUDGEMENT.Even PROPHET MOHAMMED talked about the Last Judgement by a differnet name that is KAYAMA OR KAYAMAT(as some people percieve). The time seems to have come....

No GOD talks of eternal Damnation and if Christ did ever talk of Eternal Damnation he can never be considered to be HOLY or GOD. Rest for you and your friend`s judgement. Nothing scares me so long I have the faith of the Ultimate of Ultimate almighty and I am undettered with such stupid , idiotic words like `Eternal Damnation`. Ask the person who used the word to go and frieghten a 5 year old kid. In the modern days even such kids would never get to believe all those nonsensical words
