Hi,
Dividend yield may be severely reduced in future. Corus acquisition was at height of market. Valuations would have been much lesser now. Time will tell if this large purchase will be correctly absorbed or not. Could be very traumatic if the bridging loans are not paid by generation of funds. Tata group is seen to be struggling in this. TCS price fall will reduce ability of TATA`s to generate funds.
Same goes for Tata Motors.

Investment in markets comes with its own risks. PPF is a secure bet in turbulant markets.
I have relied on topping the PPF each year and then investing surplus in funds. On more than one occasions, I had to withdraw from PPF when the market was not so favourable. It is good to have a nice sum in PPF, which you can withdraw (partly) very quickly if in need. PPF is also the best best for risk free return. Every one needs some cash on hand for emergencies. I have found that with PPF, you can have this.
If saving tax is not the main agenda then do not look at tax saver funds. These have lock in period.
