I am not competent enough to comment on charts but Power sector is one sector in India where returns are assured irrespective of inernational down turn/uptrends, $ fluctuations India cannot see power surplus position at least in next 5 - 10 years. NTPC is power major in the coutry and all risks like interest short fall in availability of raw material, staff cost raises etc are protected through PPAs(power purhcase agreements) with projects in the pipe line and its continuous plans to add more capacities its down turn if any for technical reasons is limited for limited period.

NTPC is a recently listed company and has not got a background of its trading as HUL and ITC has.
You are absolutely right that while Tata Steel has many risk as mentioned by you which NTPC does not have at all and that is the reason perhaps that it is still traded at current PE while Tata Steel has fallen to a very low PE. Having said this if the bearish market continues for a while, then NTPC being a high PE share will gradually weaken. While NTPC cannot go to 300 in the near term, it can of course fall to 100 around depending upon the weakness in the market. If market remains steady going forward, not making another bottom, then of course, we can be sure that it would not fall below 100/-. These are my views and views only and either of us can be correct or wrong.
Thanks for your views. ...

I am taking this argument only academic and not supproting NTPC against any stock. TATA steel has the risk of Corus, Commodity fall, weak demand, fund raising problems ........ they are very sensitive stocks with High risk and High reward. I am comparing with HUL and ITC as both of them are low risk low reward companies like NTPC. NTPC will neither go to 300 nor 100(at least i believe). tata steel may go to 100 or 600.
Don`t understand from your message how NTPC is not a time tested company!!

dear raocs,
Nobody is saying NTPC is not a time tested company though its relatively younger compared to counters like ITC and HUL.
But if one really wants to talk about fundamentals, this counter should be around 100 to 120 levels.
How ever valuations are also relative as pointed out by VKK ji and can defy logic in many instances.
regards

U want to compare PE of HUL, ITC with NTPC. Strange. HUL, ITC are time tested companies and hv been giving excellent performance since decades. When HULs results were weak, it too had fallen to around 100/- a few years back. Regarding ITC, I hv bought ITC around 10/50 in 1970/71 and sold at around 12/- after a year or so.
So we cannot compare ITC, HUL with NTPC. Why don`t you compare it then with Tata Steel or Sterlite, for argument sake?? If we compare NTPC with Sterlite or Tata Steel, what should be its price, just imagine.
When the market conditions get better, definitely it would command this PE but not now. However, thanks for your views. Let us wait and see its trend.

what is the PE of HUL, ITC why these stocks were not beaten down as others are? I believe the reason is their revenues not dependent on $, forex inflows or conditions in external world. they are pure domestic players. It is only my belief NTPC downward risk is not more than 10% however i am not ruling out any thing is possible in the present market conditions no bottom for any scrip.

There is nothing bad in its results. U hv to look to the relative valuation at present of all companies. Market cannot give a PE of 12 now under the present market conditions. Thats all. If it has to trade at such a PE, Market as a whole has to go up sharply from current level. Hope I am clear.

I don`t know what is bad with NTPC results as I could see in bse site its quarterly EPS is 2.56 annalized EPS of 10.24 which is much higher than QOQ and YOY. it is available at PE of 12 and next year it is adding 3500+ MW of capacity. We can never expect dramatic results or 100% hike in results in stock like NTPC.

While u hv a point but u hv to look at market conditions as well. Under the present market conditions, with these results declared by the company, there is every possibility that this share can fall further from current level, may be below 100/- as well on a day when market faces huge selling.

dear ashish,
Hope i havent conveyed the meaning properly.
I clearly mentioned that real values may differ from market valuations.Pls remember that the entire coversation began when i mentioned about the real valuations in my msg to marketman.
What i am trying to say is..stock price just the way it went up in good times , it would go down to lower levels also.
I know that NTPC stock price would go up in the long term..But it doesnt necessarily mean that the stock price deserves that value.
Regarding your suggestion of seeing the research report of `Goldman Sachs`.. you still follow them!
Power geneation is such a business , it doesnt improve its topline and bottomline every quarter.
But NTPC price is going to be artificially lifted up in future to give an impression to the public that N-deal is good for country while in reality it is the other way round.
If i have to speak naked truth , those vendors who sell equipment for nuclear power plants shell a pittance to artificially lift NTPC`s price in the name of FIIs.They will do it, for say 5 to 6 years. After 2016, they will dump the stock like anything.
If you dont believe, just wait and watch...
