Poverty still plagues U.S. cities: survey
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Most U.S. mayors and city officials say poverty is a growing problem, with many families unable to get by, according to a survey released on Monday.
Some 90 percent of city officials in the National League of Cities survey of mayors and leaders of towns of 30,000 people or more say that during the last decade poverty rates have either increased or stayed the same in their towns.
About a third of those participating consider poverty "a severe or serious problem" in their cities.
"More than four decades after the United States government declared `war` on poverty, the `official` 2008 poverty rate is 12.3 percent, not even 2 percent less than the 1967 figure of 14.2 per cent," the report said, adding:
"The federal poverty threshold, on which the national poverty rate is determined, however, is viewed as outdated by many, used since the 1960s and based on economic data from the 1950s based on food consumption being one third of one`s annual expenses."
Most respondents said the federal government`s poverty income threshold is significantly lower than what it takes to survive in their cities. While the federal government considers a family of three with an income below $17,170 impoverished, 30 percent of those surveyed said a family needs at least an income of $30,000 to get by in their cities.
Single-parent families, low-wage workers and senior citizens are most likely to be poor, and one-third of survey participants said that poverty is geographically dispersed throughout their cities.
While eight in 10 of those surveyed said that reducing poverty is a responsibility of city government, most also said that economic conditions beyond the cities` control are their biggest barrier to ending it.

How do you say bear market will end soon?
I think even price wise correction is not complete. We are still at PE 15 which is the __right__ PE. Neither too cheap not too expensive.
We will go to 2800-3200. Unless we go there, I do not think we can call ourselves bottomed out....

Thanks for the quick response. Actually the long options are available in Indian infoline trader terminal but not on ICICI Direct. I am somehow not very comfortable with India infoline, that is why I enquired.

Dear Osteoporous,
Just guessing.. you need to have the contract notes... Each FnO contract you enter into is unquely identified by the NSE! So i guess some redress should be possible.. If not with NSE, in the court of law.

Citi: Wells Fargo blocked from buying Wachovia
NEW YORK - The fight over control of Wachovia intensified Saturday, as a judge temporarily agreed to block the sale of the bank by Wells Fargo, Citigroup announced in a news release
State Supreme Court Justice Charles Ramos issued the order blocking the sale of Wachovia Corp., which Wells Fargo & Co. had agreed to purchase in a $14.8 billion deal.
Citigroup Inc. accused Wells Fargo of trying to cut off its earlier takeover offer of Wachovia`s banking operations for $2.1 billion in a deal struck with the assistance of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. On Friday, four days after that deal was struck, Wells Fargo said it was buying Wachovia.
The litigation pits two of the largest remaining financial institutions against one another as the ongoing credit crisis leads the federal government to arrange marriages and sales among banking entities.
Wells Fargo, Wachovia and Citigroup did not immediately respond to messages left late Saturday seeking comment about the temporary order blocking the sale.
The FDIC said Friday that it "stands behind its previously announced agreement with Citigroup." It also said it would review all proposals and work with regulators of all three institutions to resolve the tug-of-war.
Citigroup says it has an exclusivity agreement that bars Wachovia from talking with other potential buyers. Its shares fell sharply after the surprise announcement of the Wells Fargo-Wachovia agreement.

Dear raj_tibs
I have a query on the long contracts. In the present financial turmoil 3 years is quite a long time. What happens if the brokerage firm through which I bought a 3 yr long option does not survive? How are the investor s interest protected in such a hypothetical (but probable) case? Could you throw some light?
Thanks & regards.

BSR,
Just formulated my strategy if it falls further..
I have some sold 4300 puts (jun 2010) that are highly illiquid (sold long time back).
I think i will defend them.
So i am planning to pick 5 nifty stocks, and invest about 2-3 times my notional losses over the next few months (and use those shares as margin)...
Also hoping, that within 2 years, will get an opportunity to use the flip cash to 2 lots of futures strat...
What are your views on the stratgy (given that the puts i sold was a bad decision)
regards

I have certain observations:
experts:do not time the mkt(WRONG)
FACT:time the market
experts: buy good company at any price(wrong)
FACT: even midcap at low price will give better return and even larsen,ABB,siemens, ril, sbi IF bought at 21000 will not give u any return in five years.
EXPERTS: invest in SIP(wrong)
fact : investments at low mkt will give u always far better return than SIP.
EXPERTS :invest for long term(wrong)
FACT: always get in at better valuaion and enter at low valuation and make money. THIS may happen in a year in a mnth or EVEN A DAY .
WHY WAIT FOR 2-3 YEAR WHEN U R CERTAIN OF PROFIT IN A DAY OR MONTH.
EXPERTS:buy good company and stick for 2-3 years( wrong)
FACT: scenerio changes so rapidly that in months industry outlook changes. real estate was hot now ice cold, IT was solid getting stone,
banks under danger...suddenly maruti and hero honda flying...so ride the wave and make money and get out quickly or u will be holding a dead chicken.
