The government is reportedly obtaining legal opinion for imposing a special oil tax on the domestic crude oil production under the New Exploration Licensing Policy (Nelp). The proposed tax is supposed to kick-in after price of domestically-produced crude oil crosses the $75/barrel mark. While public sector oil producers like ONGC and Oil India would have to fork out to the government 100% of additional realisation beyond the cut-off price, private companies like Reliance Industries (RIL), Essar Oil and Cairn India would be required to pay 40% of their windfall gains, suggests report.

DO YOU KNOW WHY RIL IS PUSHED DOWN
Posted by : Leave it.Fears of export ban weighs down RIL.
Reliance Industries lost extending losses for the second straight day spooked by reports the Prime Minister’s Office may recommend levy of export tax or ban petroleum exports from its refineries in Jamnagar.
The stock had lost to Rs 2083.55 on Wednesday, 10 September 2008, when the reports first hit the market.
The market declined on weak global cues. Asian stocks fell today, 11 September 2008, after US investment bank Lehman Brothers on Wednesday, 10 September 2008, posted a record quarterly loss.
India’s largest private sector firm by market capitalisation and oil refiner has also drowned to a low level.
Reliance Industries (RIL) has two export oriented refineries in Jamnagar – the 33 million tonne existing unit and the soon to be commissioned 27 million tonne of subsidiary firm Reliance Petroleum.
Analysts say a ban on export will harm Reliance Industries (RIL)\\`s super normal profits as the company will be forced to compete with the government oil firms in the domestic market which currently sell petrol and diesel at below market prices.
RIL has two export oriented refineries in Jamnagar - the 33 million tonne existing unit and the soon to be commissioned 27 million tonne of subsidiary firm Reliance Petroleum.
On 1 September 2008, Reliance Industries scrapped its plan to transfer an 80% stake in a deepwater oil & gas block to four fully-owned units. On 27 August 2008, RIL had said it plans to transfer 80% of its holding in D6 block of the Krishna Godavari basin to four unlisted subsidiaries -- Reliance KG Exploration and Development, Reliance KG D6 E&P, Reliance KG Basin and Reliance E&P KG, to enhance flexibility to raise finances.
The Mukesh Ambani-run RIL currently owns a 90% interest in KG-DWN-98/3, better known as the D6 block, in the basin where 18 oil and gas discoveries have been reported till date. The remaining 10% stake vests with its Canadian partner Niko Resources. Valued at nearly billion with 14 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves, this is the arguably the most valuable asset held by the company.
Reliance Industries manufactures petrochemicals, synthetic fibers, fiber intermediates, textiles, blended yarn and polyester staple fiber. And also gasoline, superior kerosene oil and liquified petroleum gas.
