Dear Subodh,
I am shareholder in the company and I have been observing the trend in the counter. Every yera at one time or the other some body from the industry appears on business channels and announce that tea industry is going to do very well, but by the end of the year the companies performance will be the same as previous year. As regards the price movement of the scrip is concerned the scrip has got listed at Rs.55-60 levels in the year 2004, and its high was Rs. 140 something till date and low has been Rs. 55-60.
As far as my analyses is concerned, the company with the largest tea gardens in India, should have been a star poerformer on the bourses. If the tea industry is not in a good condition then why are companies trying to acquire additional gardens by borrowing money from institutions.
to put it in a simple way, price is slave of earnings and earnings are a function of management decision. I think you can guess.

In 2006, I entered almost all tea stocks except (Tata Tea) partly on gut feel and partly because I was seeing huge volumes. Later, it became clear that there was drought in Kenya and the stocks rallied. The rally lasted barely 2 months but I exited at the right time. The point is I sold without thinking much. The stocks collapsed after some time. Unfortunately, this time I thought that these stocks may run up higher than last time and repenting for not booking profits.
Not many people track these stocks but they have been the best opportunities for trading in the last one year. Look at the bottom-top range for McLeod 52-99, 49-83, 58-115 and now 60-85. The movements when they happen are very swift.
Tea used to be one of the best sectors where rich people invested (have you seen the movie – Parineeta) but it fell on hard times due to collapse of USSR and later Iraq.
Worst was Kenya and Sri Lanka who are low cost producers became big competitors for Indian tea cos. So this sector which was export driven earlier collapsed as supply exceeded demand. Now the domestic tea consumption is rising slowly and few years down the line, it will have good days. The current stock movements are decided by Kolkata based operators and there is no way to predict the top but the bottom I believe is the year low unless there is some major catastrophe. The best is to buy slowly – may be at this level too, ALL stocks and then add at every 15% fall some more and average.

If you have spare money to take some risk, buy some. There is nothing you can do unless promoters decide on something....

If no correction on Friday, Mkt can move upto 14.9.
If 14.9 unbroken, we can see 12.5 again.
And this could be the last major correction in the Mkt.
Good wishes!...

Likely correction ahead.
My Dear Friends,
Mkt can slip to 12k, even further....
Tomorrow later part mkt should move down very fast.
Friday could be the terror day.
You can get MR at 64-70 level again.
Watch ahead, Book profits and enjoy Bearish trend.
Policy of 50-50 or 60-40 (Sell 60 and Hold 40) could be the best for small investors in current situation.
Good Wishes!

If you try to buy huge qty, the stocks won't rally much. Except McLeod, all other stocks lack liquidity and even in McLeod, it is not as liquid.
These cos are completely opaque. The best is to buy low and book profit
partially at every rise....

Hi Subodh,
Can you please write some more on tea stocks and explain the commodity cycle for tea. And/or give us some more stories of stocks you bought in this sector and how the prices moved. Would love to learn of your experiences.
Regards,
Dragon.
