Power major NTPC Ltd is looking to expand its planned nuclear power capacity beyond the original target in the wake of the recent lifting of the global embargo on nuclear trade with the country.

“We would like to leverage the opportunity thrown up by the opening up of the nuclear segment of power generation,” NTPC’s Chairman and Managing Director, Mr R.S. Sharma, told shareholders at the company’s annual general meeting. “This (NSG approval) enables the company to explore the possibility of increasing the size of its planned nuclear portfolio of 2,000 MW by 2017,” he said.

The Nuclear Suppliers Group, a 45-nation cartel that controls global nuclear trade, approved a US-sponsored agreement that permitted the export of civilian nuclear technology and services to India earlier this month. The Indo-US civilian nuclear deal has now been sent to the US Congress for ratification.

Mr Sharma said NTPC is eyeing a consolidated turnover of Rs 1,00,000 crore by 2014, up from the gross revenues of Rs 40,011 crore clocked last fiscal.

On the thermal side, NTPC aims to raise its generation capacity by 22,430 MW during the Eleventh Plan. Mr Sharma said the company is eyeing 75,000 MW by 2017, from the 29,394-MW now.

Coal output

The state-owned firm, which is the country’s biggest electricity producer, hopes to boost coal output to as much as 14 million tonnes (mt) a year by end-2012 at the mines leased from the Centre to meet its increasing fuel needs, Mr Sharma said.

The utility plans to produce 47 mt a year by 2017 to meet power generation targets and is also looking to buy coal mines in Indonesia, Mozambique and South Africa, he said.

“In order to secure inputs for the growth plans of the company we are pushing our coal mining activities forward. We are exploring opportunities for coal and gas supplies from Indonesia, Mozambique and Nigeria,” he added.

Mr Sharma said NTPC is planning to go for standardisation and bulk ordering of units to reduce engineering time for the projects, and thereby, prune project execution time. It would also help in reduction of spares inventory optimisation of cost, he said.

The Centre has not only increased maternity leave for its employees to six months but has also cleared a two-year paid leave to enable them to take care of their children.

The order, effective from September 1, increases the maternity leave of women employees from 135 days to a cool 180 days each for two children.

Besides, from now, women employees can take paid leave for up to two years (730 days) during their career to “take care’’ of their two children without affecting their seniority. Even if a woman has only one child, she can take the two-year leave.

Termed “child care leave’’, it is besides the maternity break they are entitled to.

Adding to the bonanza, a woman employee can avail of child care leave in any combination until her two children attain the age of 18.

Elated over the nuclear suppliers' group waiver, the nuclear power corporation of india is confident that uninterrupted fuel supplies can help double the power production from its atomic plants through greater capacity utilisation.
the state-owned nuclear energy generator, which currently runs 17 reactors in different parts of the country, hopes to produce up to 4,000 MW power without any hiccups once fuel supply becomes regular....

Dear,
A difficult day, but, good for invester to pick good ones in small lots and keep on accumulating...

KARUNAS,

Yes Sir, it seems that ntpc is in a consolidation mode right now between 170-180 level. It may not fall below 170 before it takes off. There is no hurry in the movement. It is a slow mover. That is why it is attractive. The fast movers may take us to big rides but will not give any indication of its downfall. We know it when we are in trisanku where both ends are too far. NTPC did it once while other riders did it several times.

The stock mkt teached me to be a slow mover. Presently at least I am. Picking up small pkts may keep my bag full. Better to carry a comfortable load. After all, step after step makes us to cover a distance our eyes can catch. What we can see ahead is our goal and beyond it is always unknown. The unknown at the first instance becomes known when we reach there, keeping further unknowns always ahead. I don`t know whether it is the correct approach but as far as I am concerned, it seems to be correct.

thanks for your interaction,

knair

hardybull,

I have no clue who is the early bird. It still has many accumulators especially whenever there is a dip. When buying starts, it has to move up. And a slow and steady move is what I am looking for. May be others too. I have investments in ntpc and will continue to keep it in my portfolio.

fmcgbites,

Let ntpc cross 200 in near term. Thats the firs step. Once it moves up, its speed may be slow but steady. I like those stocks which move in this fashion.

ntpc has a future becoz it is where the future activities are to be based on.

I hope it will touch 400 but no time frame can be fixed, and if we know that what else one needs to become a billionaire.
