My Portfolo had consisted of NFO and thematic Funds which based on the advice of Mr Ranjan/Mr Wadia Etc and my own intution I had shifted at peak levels from Nov 07 to April 08. Currently as an NRI i hold the following purchased at 15,17000 and todays value of 17,6000.
HSBC Equity DRei 15 %
Fkln Primaplus DRei 14 %
Reliance Nri DRei 12 %
Magnum Contra DREi 10 %
Tata Pure Equity DRei 9 %
Tata Infrastucture Grow 9 %
Birla Sunlife Equity DRei 7.5 %
Sundaram Select Focus DRei 7.5 %
HDFC Top200 DRei 4 %
HDFC Midcap Grow 4 %
DSP ML Equity Drei 2.5 %
SBI Infrastruct Grow 2.5 %
Birla Midcap DRei 2.5 %
Franklin Flexicap Grow 1.5 %
UTI MNC Drei 0.5%
The lockin funds of HDFC Midcap and SBI infrastructure i am blocked for 3yrs.
On a time frame of 3 yrs Please advice on the composition of the above and future investments / additions or deletions. What about any specfic Debt Funds also ? Please advice. Monc

I second whatever Ashal has said. One invest in mutual funds because it reduces risk because of diversification. Too much of anything is bad. Restrict your number of funds to anywhere between 6-8 funds. See that atleast 60% of your equity investments goes towards large cap funds. ...

Dear monc, u have total 15 funds in ur portfolio, which is not a good sign at all. 8-10 funds r sufficient for every portfolio. Here r my take on ur investment. 1. Large cap - HSBC Equity DRei 15 %, Fkln Primaplus DRei 14 %, Sundaram Select Focus DRei 7.5 %, HDFC Top200 DRei 4 % (total 40.5%), In this category ur over all portfolio %age is ok but Fr.Pr. + is dragging the performance down. replace it with SSFocus. which is the top most performing fund in ur portfolio. After rezig only 3 funds in this category 'll remain. 2. Mid cap - HDFC Midcap Grow 4 %, Birla Midcap DRei 2.5 % (6.5%) over all exposure to this category is quite low & also the most powerful fund of this category (Rel. Gr.) is not there. switch from both funds to Rel. Gr. & also some switching from diversified category to Rel. Gr. Only 1 fund in this category. 3. Diversified/Multicap - Reliance Nri DRei 12 %, Magnum Contra DREi 10 %, Tata Pure Equity DRei 9 %, Birla Sunlife Equity DRei 7.5 %, DSP ML Equity Drei 2.5 %, Franklin Flexicap Grow 1.5 % (42.5%) Under this category Only DSP & Mag Contra (although by name it is contra fund but now a days it is more like a pure diversified fund) r notable performer. Switch 50% of Rel. NRI to Gr. & 50% to DSP. Switch Tata pure Eq. to T200 & SSF. Switch birla Eq. & Fr. flexicap to Fr. India eq. income fund for global diversification as mentioned with MNC funds below. Total 2 funds under this category DSP & Mag. Contra. 4. Sectoral/Thematic - Tata Infrastucture Grow 9 %, SBI Infrastruct Grow 2.5 % (11.5%), being close ended of SBI prune down tata infra to over all infra exposure around 5%. Invest from Tata to T200. 2 funds as of now. 5. - Global/MNC - UTI MNC Drei 0.5%, To keep global exposure in ur portfolio, this is not the right fund, Fr. India eq. income fund 'll be a better choice. Switch from UTI to Fr. india eq. income with switching from Tata pure eq. as well as birla eq. also as discussed above. total 1 fund in this category. After all the rezig following funds 'll remain in ur portfolio. 1. HSBC Eq. 2. SSF 3. HDFC T200 4. Rel. Gr. 5. DSP ML Eq. 6. Mag. Contra 7. Tata Infra 8. SBI Infra (no choice due to close ended) 9. Fr. India Eq. Income u can check the performance of all ur current funds & recommended funds @ VROL & after that u'll come to know what is the reason for such major rezig. Regarding balanced funds i'm not recommending any at this time. may be after 6-12 months. while reviewing the performance of current recommended funds. Debt funds not now. Thanks Ashal...

Dear monc, it is always a pleasure to see the changes in your portfolio due to advice of Ranjan/Wadia. Good job. Keep it up. Your portfolio is very good but needs a bit trimming and just a bit of rebalancing. Because of being blocked in SBI Infrastructure, you can't obviously switch out from it, but you do need to reduce your exposure in Infrastructure Funds from an overall 11.5% to under 5%. So, it would be prudent if you could sell/switch Tata Infrastructure to Tata Balanced Fund as I do not see any Balanced Fund in your portfolio. You can stay on with UTI MNC Fund as it's investment horizon is being widened to Indian Domestic Companies which derive substantial revenue from International markets. Your large cap ratio of investment is very small at 11.5% and Midcap exposure is rather high at 28%, so you could switch from Birla Mid cap to Birla Sunlife Frontline Equity Fund. You should also a substantial part of your investment in Franklin Prima Plus to Templeton India Equity Income Fund. Regarding Debt Funds, you better stay invested in Equity Funds for better returns and maybe look to add some Balanced Funds. Considering your time frame of 3 years, you should definitely reduce Infrastructure and Mid cap funds and add Large Cap and Balanced Funds. Best of luck. Regards, Srikanth...
