Sena, MNS want SBI to recruit only locals

All those who want to undertake fresh recruitment in Mumbai will have to face this double whammy, as the State Bank of India (SBI) realised recently.

At a time when Shiv Sena and the MNS are busy sharpening their sons-of-the-soil rhetoric, SBI was threatened by both the parties of serious consequences if it doesn’t recruit 80% locals in its proposed drive. SBI recently released advertisements inviting applications to fill clerical and officer-level vacancies. Coming in the wake of a fierce power struggle between Shiv Sena and MNS, the advertisements caught the attention of these two parties before anyone else.

This resulted in leaders from both parties flocking to SBI offices demanding reservation for locals. The Shiv Sena-led delegation called on officials at the SBI recruitment board while the MNS leaders gatecrashed the bank’s headquarters at Nariman Point. Shiv Sena said if the locals are not given preference in jobs in the state, it would take to the street. Going one step ahead, the Raj Thackeray-led MNS said 100% jobs should be reserved for the “sons of the soil” , failing which the party would launch an agitation in Maharashtra.

In separate statements issued here, the two parties had more or less common demand - give jobs to local people rather than “outsiders” . The demand comes in the wake of the country’s largest bank announcing registrations this month for recruiting 20,000 clerical staff.
BEING a central government organisation, the bank follows reservations for various categories as prescribed by the Centre. Although the bank is headquartered in Mumbai, the postings will be across the country.
Written examinations will be conducted across 79 centres.

SBI’s recruitment drive is by far the biggest employment generator in the financial sector this year.

Other banks like Union Bank of India and Bank of India (BoI), too, are planning to hire in the range of 1,000 employees, while banks like Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) and Bank of Baroda (BoB) are in the process of accessing their staff requirement.

Unlike in the past, SBI is now looking for people who will help market the bank’s various credit and liability products. In its advertisement , the bank has said: “The new recruits must have a flair for marketing, and will be required to make customer calls and provide banking services, advisory services and cross-sell products etc inside and outside bank premises.”
