Petroleum Ministry asks for rise in Gas price

Posted by : cmet
Price when posted : BSE: Rs 1183.50 ( 3.07 % ), NSE: Rs. 1184.10 ( 3.14 % )

ET has reported that the petroleum ministry has put up a Cabinet note to hike the prices of natural gas produced by ONGC and OIL by almost 31%. This is expected to boost the bottom lines of these companies which have been selling gas at subsidised rates until now.
ONGC and OIL have been waiting for the last 4 years for this price hike.
Gas accounts for 11% of ONGCs revenues. A leading brokerage house has estimated that the price rise will add Rs 3 per share to the eps.
At present the gas business is contributing negatively to the margins of ONGC and this is expected to be a marginal correction which will make up for past losses. This correction could lead to an upside of Rs 2000 crores in revenue on an annual basis.
a senior cabinet official has off the record stated that the aim is to raise the price of gas to $4.2 per mmbtu, the benchmark price at which Reliance Industries is allowed to sell gas frpm KG basin.
What remains to be seen is if the Govt will accede to this request as it will mean higher input costs in fertiliser, steel, auto makers and power generation units....

What is MBTU & Cu Meter Ratio

Posted by : avijitb
Price when posted : BSE: Rs 1183.50 ( 3.07 % ), NSE: Rs. 1184.10 ( 3.14 % )

A standard unit of measurement used to denote both the amount of heat energy in fuels and the ability of appliances and air conditioning systems to produce heating or cooling. A BTU is the amount of heat required to increase the temperature of a pint of water (which weighs exactly 16 ounces) by one degree Fahrenheit. Since BTUs are measurements of energy consumption, they can be converted directly to kilowatt-hours (3412 BTUs = 1 kWh) or joules (1 BTU = 1,055.06 joules). A wooden kitchen match produce approximately 1 BTU, and air conditioners for household use typically produce between 5,000 and 15,000 BTU.

MBTU stands for one million BTUs, which can also be expressed as one decatherm (10 therms). MBTU is occasionally used as a standard unit of measurement for natural gas and provides a convenient basis for comparing the energy content of various grades of natural gas and other fuels.

One cubic foot of natural gas produces approximately 1,000 BTUs, so 1,000 cu.ft. of gas is comparable to 1 MBTU. MBTU is occasionally expressed as MMBTU, which is intended to represent a thousand thousand BTUs.

1 MBTU = 1000 Cubic Ft.

Hope you will be able to covert Cu Ft to sm3. Litre is used to express liquid volme not gas.

1 MBTU can produce approximately 293 Units (KWh) of energy. However we may have to take into account the efficiency factor into consideration while converting to equivalent electrical energy for finacial calculations.

Cotemplating Nuclear plant in Assam

Posted by : rvk41
Price when posted : BSE: Rs 1183.50 ( 3.07 % ), NSE: Rs. 1184.10 ( 3.14 % )

Oil exploration firm Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) Saturday said it has stumbled upon a reserve of uranium while carrying out exploration work in an oilfield in Assam.

According to a senior ONGC official, traces of uranium were detected during exploration work at the Borholla oilfield in Jorhat district, about 360 km east of here.

`Uranium traces were detected during examination of logs of the Borholla oilfield. Now a joint study is on with the Uranium Corporation to take this entire process forward,` said A.K. Hazarika, director of ONGC`s onshore operations.

This is the first time that uranium traces have been found in an Assam oilfield although other north-eastern states like Meghalaya have rich reserves.

`According to preliminary findings, the uranium reserves could be huge in this area,` another senior ONGC official said.

Surveys conducted by the atomic energy department indicate there could be up to 10,000 tonnes of uranium in and around Domiasiat, about 150 km west of Meghalaya state capital Shillong, the area considered to have the largest sandstone-type deposits in the country.

Meghalaya`s uranium ore reserves are spread over a mountainous terrain in deposits varying from eight to 47 metres underground

Spurred by the recent findings, ONGC is now contemplating setting up a nuclear power plant if its current collaboration with Uranium Corp results in the discovery of uranium in Assam

J V with Mittal still in tact

Posted by : rvk41
Price when posted : BSE: Rs 1148.30 ( -0.20 % ), NSE: Rs. 1148.00 ( -0.21 % )

Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has clarified the statement regarding ONGC JV with Mittal Investment Sarl.

There were certain print media reports with misleading / distorting captions like ``Mittal may wind up JV with ONGC``.

To clarify these reports, ONGC said that it is not winding up its JV with Mittal Investment Sarl.

The decision to merge the two separate JVs into one entity are only for convenience of regulatory compliances and management in a more effective manner.

``We would like to clarify the status as under :

ONGC and Mittal Investment Sarl had set up two JV Companies in 2005 with details as under :

ONGC Mittal Energy (OMEL) as a JV between ONGC Videsh (49.98%), Mittal Investment Sarl (48.02%) and SBI Caps (2%)

ONGC Mittal Energy Services (OMESL) as a JV between ONGC (49.98%), Mittal Investment Sarl (48.02%) and SBI Caps (2%)

The objective of OMEL was to jointly invest for oil & gas opportunities in select countries and the objective of OMESL was to trade in oil & gas, primarily in respect of production from OMEL, and shipping of such products.

While OMEL is currently having a producing oil asset in Syria and exploratory blocks in Nigeria, OMESL has been a dormant company as the co-promoters mutually consented not to pursue purely trading and shipping activities, ``it said.
