The Company manufactures finished leather of various types, stitched
shoe express, fancy leather goods, precision machine tool accessories
such as collets and feed fingers, transmision leather belting, Cone
drum belts and other strap items. The Company also carries on
business of air cargo and clearing and forwarding.
The Company was founded in 1868 as a partnership firm by H.E. Gordon
and G.W.P. Woodroffe with one office in Madras and another in London
is do essentially merchant trading.
In 1924, the offices at both Madras & London were converted into two
independent limited companies. The Company at Madras has since been
functioning under the name Gordon Woodroffe & Company (Madras) Pvt.
Ltd., upto 31st March, 1980 when it was converted into a public
limited company. The name was changed to Gordon Woodroffe Ltd with
effect from 9th April, 1980.
Tullis Woodroffe & Co. Ltd is a subsidiary of the Company.
The major activities since inception were shipping, dealing in East
Indian products, particularly in dressed hides and skins popularly
known as East Indian semi-tanned leathers and all other activities
connected with shipping such as clearing and forwarding cargo,
superintending etc. In 1928, the company undertook the manufacture
chrome tanned finished leathers and started producing finished
leathers ready for making shoes/footwear and fancy leather and travel
goods. This manufacturing activity was carried on by a subsidiary
company under the name of Gordon Woodroffe Leather Manufacturing Co.
Ltd. IN 1968, this subsidiary was merged with the company and it
started functioning as a separate division of the company.
The Company's freehold land at Pallavaram and George Town at Madras
were revalued as on 30th June, 1985 & the net surplus was credited to
2001 - Jumbo International Holdings Ltd. proposes to acquire
10,11,383 shares of the
company by way of inter se transfer.
