He did not have the slightest idea about the leasing and hire purchase business while starting his career over two decades ago at consultancy firm Ferguson. An engineer-turned-management graduate from IIM-Ahmedabad, Dipak Gupta, joint managing director of Kotak Mahindra Bank, today ranks among the highly rated bankers in the industry. The journey has its share of excitements and disappointments.

In an interview to Moneycontrol.com for its fortnightly feature CEO Spotlight, Gupta spoke about a wide range of topics from the initial days of his career to shouldering the responsibility to start a bank. He rues the lack of time for his weekly farming activity, because of work pressure. But the father of twins, whom he adorably calls “chalk and cheese”, is happy as long as he is able to maintain a work-life balance. 

What after banking? While it is still some way off, Gupta plans to take up something in health or education sector after retirement.
