Tanuja Chandra , Director

"The reforms the finance minister brought on the farmers is sensational," says Tanuja Chandra. She feels that since agriculture is the foundation of our country the debt waiver from public sector banks is a good thing. Speaking about the income tax Tanuja says,"Tax reforms are a good thing for people in my bracket. I feel tax reforms are a good thing provided they are executed for the right reason." Tanuja believes the filtered cigarettes should’ve had duty raises rather the non-filtered ones. "Making tobacco expensive is good for the health of any country," she adds. “Every woman should be financially sound. If a woman can have more money in her bank account it is a good thing, it will make them less dependent on others,” said Tanuja when we asked her about the new tax slab for women. Luxury cars price drops she feels is not a very good thing. “See it is only the rich ones who buy luxury cars. Now those who already have four cars, will have six cars!” In contrast to that Tanuja feels that the excise duty cuts on small cars and two-wheelers is good provision. “Even though infrastructure will be affected, it will help in realising the vehicle-owning dreams of many,” says she. When we asked her about the cost of gym equipment coming down she laughs, “I think this is in wake of more and more people wanting to look good with toned bodies.” On a serious note she adds, “I think this will affect only the upper middle class folks, because the remaining exercise in their daily commutes to work.”

Marc Robinson , Model turned choreographer

"It has been an ordinary man’s feel good budget," says Marc Robinson. Though he still has some grudges against our finance minister. “TDS and service tax have not seen a lot of change,” he adds. The drop in the excise duties on small cars and two wheelers, Marc believes, is a good thing for the common man. “But it will mean more congestion on the roads,” he continues. In response to the duty raise on non-filter cigarettes Marc says, “They should go ahead and ban them!” Unlike most celebrities, Marc is okay with the increase in cellphone prices, “I can make do with it,” he quips. Gym equipment rate cuts should help to make the country’s youth fitter, Marc feels. On a lighter vein he adds, “I hope more politicians get fitter!” Marc Robinson is a model turned choreographer.

Minisha Lamba , Actress

Minisha Lamba is unhappy with the budget. There has been no provision for tax deductions to self-employed professionals. "It is saddening since these professionals fall in the highest tax slabs," she says. The increase in the short-term capital gain tax is also not a good thing, she says: "Retail investors will suffer because it is them who help drive the newfound India Inc." In fact, when we caught up with her before the Budget was read out, she said, "I hope that that very unclear, ill defined, murky area called service tax gets abolished." With the finance minister not doing anything about it, she is certainly not pleased. She is happy about the new tax slabs and exemption rate for women. Duty raise on non-filter cigarettes, she feels, will help keep rural India healthy.

Rakhi Sawant , Reality TV personality

Reality TV personality, Rakhi Sawant feels the raise in basic exemption limit on IT is the best thing the government has done for Indian women today. She says, "The law isn’t doing much for the Indian women. This is the least they could do." Speaking about the new tax slab, Rakhi adds, "It is a good thing for the folks in my industry. But I think the common man should be exempted from any sort of income tax." She even asked us if the rumour she heard about the government sending a vegetable vendor an income tax notice was true. "Income tax is a good thing for all of those who are rolling in money, especially black money," she quips. Rakhi believes the reduction in excise duties on small cars and two-wheelers will have a 50-50 implication on the masses. "It will be a good thing for the middle class, but the government will have to face the consequences with more polluted cities and damage to infrastructure." "They should be banned," she says, when we told her about the duty raise on non-filter cigarettes. She feels these should be made so expensive that the masses will refrain from using them. The cellphone provision doesn’t really bother Rakhi. "I get my cellphones free of charge!" Her friends keep gifting her cellphones, she claims. We also heard her telling her co-stars, "Bahut achcha budget hai!"

Neil Nitin Mukesh , Actor

"Increase in the short term capital gain tax is a shocker," says actor Neil Nitin Mukesh. According to him, the reforms in the Income tax slab is a good thing because every individual has a right to keep every penny he earns. The provisions that found favour with Neil are the increase in duty on non-filter cigarettes, the new tax slab for women, and reduction of excise duties on everyday items such as puffed rice and coffee. Speaking about the raise in the basic exemption limit on income tax for women he says, "It is like creating a new respect for women who are out there earning their bread and butter." He rated the price cuts in the luxury car segment and gym equipments with, "That's fabulous!" Neil believes it would be nice to see people have gyms in their homes. Provisions which got a thumbs down from Neil were the increase in the cellphone prices and the reduction in excise duties of small cars and two wheelers. He says, "Cellphones are not an investment but an expense as electronic goods have a fixed lifespan. I am not happy with this provision." The excise cuts on two-wheelers, he feels, "have double implications. On one hand, it is good news for all those who want to have their own vehicles. On the other, it will have severe consequences on the roads." Neil Nitin Mukesh, made his feature film debut recently in director Sriram Raghavan's, 'Johnny Gaddar'.

Sonu Sood , Actor

"Tax rates have come down, which is a good thing. But in a populous country like India, it is still too much. "Compared to other countries, I feel it (tax rates) should come down even further," says Sonu. The excise duty cuts on small cars and two wheelers announced in the budget he feels is a good thing because this will fulfill the dreams of most Indians to possess their own vehicles. About the increase in duty on non-filter cigarettes he says, "People who have been smoking 20 cigarettes a day may cut down to 10 a day. But it wouldn't bring about a big a change. Because, in the end it is an individual choice." Sonu believes the new tax slab for women is a welcome change. Cell phones will now be more expensive. Does this worry him? "It is not something I buy on a daily basis! I change my phone once in six to eight months. And it is an investment, so it wouldn't affect me much. Gym equipment duties have also been reduced. "Let's hope for a slash in the gym membership rates," he quips. Sonu Sood was most recently seen as Aishwarya Rai's brother in Ashutosh Gowariker's Jodha Akbar.
