IndiaInfoline research has come out with their views on post budget impact analysis. According to the research firm “The overriding theme of Budget 2008-09 was populism, as expected. Apart from major thrust on the basic drivers of rural upliftment, the government has tried to stimulate consumption and moderate inflation by various means. The key negatives were the lower industry and infrastructure focus and increase in short term capital gains tax on equity transactions. All in all, it is a feel-good budget for a common man but lacks any immediate triggers for equity investors.”

Budget Highlights

  • Economy - remains on firm growth path
  • Emphasis on agriculture, education, healthcare and rural development was high as expected
  • Emphasis on Industry and Infrastructure surprisingly low
  • Direct Taxes - Individual gain, capital pain
  • Indirect Taxes - Excise cut on multiple items to induce consumption
  • Securities transaction tax modification to hurt traders, arbitragers and propriety trades.
